Going Places: A Discussion of Momentum

This workshop will focus our attention on momentum. We will consider how authors create momentum in their own work (in 诗歌 & 散文), how we might establish momentum in our own 写作, 和策略, 技巧, 和 practices to foster momentum in our 写作 life.

Our time will be spent considering selections from other

This workshop will focus our attention on momentum. We will consider how authors create momentum in their own work (in 诗歌 & 散文), how we might establish momentum in our own 写作, 和策略, 技巧, 和 practices to foster momentum in our 写作 life.

Our time will be spent considering selections from other

*The first meeting will be spent discussing readings selected by the instructor. Our discussions will be focused on our observations, keeping in mind the writerly strategies we might apply to our own work.

*At our second meeting participants will have the opportunity to share drafts of work generated from our first session discussions 和 readings. We will describe our responses so that the author has a sense of the reader’s experience.

*At our third meeting participants will continue to share original work. Discussion will also focus on successful 写作 practices.

*Our fourth meeting will discuss publication opportunities 和 the submission process.

The collaborative nature of our course offers 作家 a space to be heard 和 provides an opportunity for us to share ideas 和 work in a productive 和 safe environment. After the conclusion of our final class, participants are invited to submit a 5-page portfolio of 写作 和 receive feedback from the instructor.

We dedicate our meetings to the wonderful task of reading 和 写作. We foster one of the most essential elements of the 写作 和 reading life – community.

What 写作 accomplishment are you most proud of?

Seriously, I still remember the first story I wrote. Making something was new 和 wonderful. I’ve been fortunate to have found encouragement along the way 和 I’ve found people who loved the same process. The magic of the creative process has never left me, 和 I’ve been stubborn enough to never let it go. At the same time, I’ve learned to keep a thing you ought to give it away.

What is your personal motto, or something like a proverb that you live by (写作 related or not)?

罗马谚语, “Quid vesper ferat”, incertum美国东部时间,” is about the only thing that stuck with me from Latin 101. “今夜会发生什么是不确定的.”

我看到更多的是冒险而不是预兆. I appreciate the reminder that expectations mean little, preparation means more. It’s not the plan we have for our 写作, 甚至一天, it’s the discovery 和 being ready when it arrives. It’s a nice way to start an evening, a morning, or a poem.

What’s the best thing students can take away from this class?

Writing can be a solitary act 和 it is easy to become consumed by our own voice, 受挑战阻碍, 担忧, 或抱负. The echo chamber is real, 和 it’s important to find new ways of reading, listening, 和 写作. It’s nice to meet 作家 和 searchers on the same path. In our 写作 和 risk taking, I hope we leave with some new 技巧 和 写作 strategies. I hope we are adventurous enough to use a few new tools from the toolbox. We all show up with an urgency 和 desire to share our voice. I hope folks walk away knowing their urgency is seen, 和 their voice is heard.

What’s your favorite thing about the IWC?

There is no art, no community, no readers, without the people. 通过课程提供, 沙龙和读书会, 最重要的是, 它对作家的支持, the IWC underst和s the community it serves 和 the value of giving us a space for our voices to grow.

What are some of your favorite books on 写作 craft?

一个好朋友告诉我 艺术家之路, by Julia Cameron, 和 some of her advice is, “Just jump. 网会出现.“我喜欢这个想法. All three books offer advice on living a creative life. 有这么多手工书可用, I also remember the best teachers are the poems 和 stories 和 novels we read. The way to learn craft is to read good stuff 和 try to write good stuff. 你应该多做一些. 好消息——这很有趣.
